The God Helmet — Dr. Michael Persinger’s Legacy
Developed by neuroscientist Dr. Michael Persinger at Laurentian University (Canada). Also known as the Koren Helmet or Shiva / Shiv system. It applies low-intensity, complex magnetic fields to the temporal lobes with the stated aim of inducing experiences that subjects interpret as spiritual presence, “God consciousness,” or sensed presence — states similar to those reported in deep meditation or prayer.
Persinger’s decades of work became influential (and controversial) in neurotheology and consciousness research. The effects are highly individual and remain outside mainstream clinical acceptance.
How It Works
- 🧠 Helmet with electromagnetic coils positioned over the temporal lobes
- 🧲 Delivers weak, patterned / rotating magnetic fields (typically microTesla range)
- ⏱️ Sessions usually last 20–60 minutes in a quiet, dark environment
- 💻 Requires a computer; self-operation while wearing the helmet is not recommended
Comparison to Similar Consciousness Tools
Full disclosure: we have not personally experienced a God Helmet session. Recent head injuries make us cautious about additional cranial magnetic stimulation. If you have a unit and want it documented or opened for technical photos, get in touch.
The device is unique in targeting temporal-lobe magnetic stimulation for altered-state research. It is not a frequency generator in the Rife / biofeedback sense and is not marketed for conventional wellness protocols. Compared with pharmacological routes to altered states, it is non-chemical — that is its primary practical distinction.
